Marionetas – Bonecos – Fantoches

This is a whole weekend for you and your family to experience an enchanting popular tradition of puppets animated by great artists. It is a unique opportunity to see these stars of the Italian and Portuguese puppet theatre. Sicilian puppets (Pupi Siciliani) and Neapolitan puppets (Pulcinella), Robertos and Bonecos de Santo Aleixo, together and in different performances, will occupy gardens, beaches, streets, theatres, and clubs.

From Italy come the Sicilian marionettes (Pupi Siciliani) of the company Figli d'Arte Cuticchio (Palermo), who bring to life the chivalrous and romantic stories of Orlando and Angelica, And also the Neapolitan puppet (Pulcinella), manipulated by Bruno Leone, from the Teatro delle Guarattelle, who brings to Portimão the classic stories of Pulcinella, this classic character who originated in the Commedia dell'Arte of the 17th century and became a reference in Neapolitan puppetry.

The city of Portimão is also the stage for traditional Portuguese puppet theatre, represented by the Dom Roberto Theatre (Intangible Cultural Heritage of Portugal) and the Bonecos de Santo Aleixo. The famous and strident glove puppets will be brought by José Gil (S.A. MARIONETAS) and João Costa (Mãozorra Associação Cultural), who will present plays from the traditional repertoire of the Teatro Dom Roberto, such as 'A Tourada', 'O Barbeiro' and 'Castelo dos Fantasmas', as well as from the new repertoire, such as 'O Caçador'. Not to be missed are the famous characters of the Bonecos de Santo Aleixo - Alentejo puppets recovered by CENDREV - with unique characteristics, such as Master Salas and Father Chancas.
