Published in 1984, The Unbearable Lightness of Being** is a central novel in Milan Kundera’s work, in which philosophical reflection intertwines with fiction to interrogate the human condition. Through the relationships between Tomas, Tereza, Sabina and Franz, the author explores the tension between lightness and weight, chance and responsibility, desire and commitment, against the backdrop of the Prague Spring and the Soviet occupation of Czechoslovakia. The novel questions whether life gains meaning through what repeats and becomes fixed, or through what happens only once and disappears, building a narrative where the body, love and memory are fields of conflict.
Having read the work, in this Books to Eat gathering, Milan Kundera’s literary universe moves into the kitchen to be cooked. After this literary and gastronomic journey, the next book in the club will be introduced: Breakfast of Champions, by Kurt Vonnegut.
Books to Eat is a literary gastronomic club that brings together literature and cooking, transforming the reading of books into culinary experiences shared around the table. Across several gatherings at EscolaNova, each book is introduced and read by participants between sessions, and then explored in the kitchen through its atmosphere, bringing together thought, creation and conviviality.
