23 March 2025 Former Primary School of Bordeira · Aljezur

Inauguration of EscolaNova
Bordeira Arts Centre

Participatory Art · Sound · Movement · Photography · Documentary · Gastronomy

The first day of EscolaNova will be an unforgettable celebration. A former centenary school from the Estado Novo era is reborn as a centre dedicated to contemporary arts and rural culture. Photographs and a film will pay tribute to the Portuguese and foreign residents of Bordeira and the former students of the village school.

The dance and music performance R U M O R will inaugurate the school’s playground, transforming it into an actual performance space. Here, the story of the shows to come will begin—planted like seeds for artistic enjoyment and learning. R U M O R brings together the Rancho Folclórico da Figueira and seven contemporary dance performers, accompanied by evocative soundscapes, to tell the story of transforming old places into non-places swallowed by tourism.

This will be done in the presence of local officials who helped us bring this project to life and everyone who wishes to join us in celebrating and discovering this new hot spot in the municipality of Aljezur.

Portraits
João Mariano — PT

To reveal village life through the people who inhabit it today, photographer João Mariano has begun a collection of portraits of Bordeira’s residents. At this stage, the collection consists of fourteen photographs, now on display, which will continue to grow as we get to know more inhabitants—until they feel comfortable enough to be photographed with ease and joy. Beyond capturing a beautiful portrait, they also give the village the lifeblood and energy it needs: its people, here and now.

EscolaNova
Thomas Ortegat-Traen — BE

This documentary, directed by filmmaker Thomas Ortegat-Traen, set out to track down former students of the Bordeira village primary school from the 1940s to the 1990s. We found a fantastic group of people—all residents of this village, of different ages and professions—who shared their adventures and misadventures but, above all, revisited the mischievous games they once played, both in and outside the school.

EscolaNova is the title of this multi-autobiographical film, which portrays an era and explores the impact of Estado Novo education in a low-population-density region. More than just a historical record, it offers a deep dive into how these individuals reimagine themselves as they revisit the past and their school memories.
