Bread

The grain of wheat is a sleeping clock. It is in no hurry. It knows that time is like water: it cannot be held in one’s hand. When it falls to the ground, it performs the noblest gesture there is it disappears. And, in disappearing, it becomes the future.

“Bread” is the fruit of labour: to sow, to harvest, to grind, to knead, to bake. It is a metaphor for effort, fatigue, and the dignity of work. “You shall earn your bread by the sweat of your brow.” Bread, being easily shared, symbolises fraternity. To break bread is a gesture of union.
