Sun Day

Participatory Art · Music · Dance · Culinary Arts · Visual Arts

EscolaNova celebrates light, creation and togetherness this summer solstice with a full day of activities for all the senses. SUN DAY is an invitation to savour, explore, feel and imagine — from food to dance, collage to music, deep listening, and sound vibration experiences.

We begin the day with a culinary workshop led by António Rosa, where Algarvean flavour and tradition meet contemporary creativity. In the afternoon, we dive into visual creation with Ricardo Falcão and Madalena Victorino in a collage workshop for restless hands and imaginative minds. The body takes the stage in Dia a Dia, a sensitive and poetic dance performance by Ana Jezabel, performed by Sofia Kafol and herself and created for audiences of all ages. At sunset, it’s time for music: the Sunset Concert with Alex Moniz and Pedro Salvador brings songs that celebrate life in communion with nature and the public. To close the day, a moment of introspection and well-being: Nídia Barata guides us through a vibrational journey with Tibetan bowls and gongs to harmonise body, mind and spirit.

A day of sun. A day for everyone.

SUN DAY takes place once a month. It transforms EscolaNova into a vibrant celebration space from sunrise to sunset. With a rich and diverse programme, this day invites active participation: cooking, learning, playing, repairing, moving the body or simply basking in the sun. Everything revolves around making with our hands and bodies, the wisdom of the land, and the arts in their many forms. A true community festivity woven with shared moments, memories, discoveries and encounters.

Organic farmer and gastronomic curator António Rosa is a profound connoisseur of Algarve’s culinary traditions — a cuisine shaped by the sea and the vegetable gardens that draw the local landscape. In this workshop, he invites us to taste ancient recipes with a contemporary twist in a moment of shared stories, aromas and knowledge. On the menu: Algarve-style snails, gazpacho, grilled sardines, “upside-down” potatoes and salad montanheira (mountain salad).

Collage
with Ricardo Falcão and Madalena Victorino

Collage is an art form that transforms used paper into new images through the creative juxtaposition of cut-outs. Practised by countless artists over time, this technique invites us to dive into a visual universe made of fragments: pages from old and new books, illustrations, photographs, paintings and graphics that, when combined, gain new meanings. A landscape of paper takes shape between hands and imagination — rich in interpretation and suggestion. An afternoon to explore the evocative power of images and give form to pictorial ideas using glue, scissors and creativity.

Dia a Dia
by Ana Jezabel

“STOP! Look around you at the trees, the moon, a flock of birds... and listen to what surrounds you, what is within you, and even the silence. Memorise these sensations — they define your relationship with the world. They are the driving force of your Day to Day! The best things in life have no lasting form. Ask yourself: Where am I? Answer: Thank you. I am here!”

Sunset Concert
with Alex Moniz and Pedro Salvador

This edition of the Sunset Concert brings fresh sounds and musical landscapes with Alex Moniz and Pedro Salvador. Two guitarists — and their electric guitars — meet once again to invent and reinvent songs from their personal repertoires. Nostalgic melodies and vibrant riffs fill the air with energy, rhythm and joy as the sun sets on the horizon. This open-air concert is designed for all ages — a natural space to sing, dance and share happy moments.

Alex Moniz is a musician and producer from the Hot Clube de Portugal with a background in jazz. A multi-instrumentalist and creator of projects such as Galgo, Yakuza and Qer Dier, he has also composed for dance performances and directed music for various stage and community-based works. In 2023, he founded the Meio do Mato – Cultural Association in Monchique.

Pedro Salvador is a musician, composer, and performer with a career marked by musical creations in theatre, dance, and community arts projects. Therapeutic vibrations with sound bowls and gongs
with Nídia Barata

Nídia Barata invites us to explore the healing power of sound through Tibetan bowls and gongs in a unique experience of self-knowledge and well-being. When played, these instruments emit unique vibrations that reveal their therapeutic qualities, which can promote inner harmony and balance. In this sound journey, Nídia will teach us techniques for self-care, using the sounds and vibrations of the bowls and gongs as powerful tools for deep relaxation and energy recovery. A moment to reconnect with our essence through the sonic magic resonating from each bowl.
