Sun Day

Participatory Art · Dance · Visual Arts · Object Theatre

We are at the beginning — the early days of EscolaNova. We've prepared a day full of hands-on activities and small performances to celebrate this new beginning. An open invitation to discover, together, what moves us, what inspires us, and what we need — from morning until sunset.

We imagined this day as a time for leisure and making. Making soup, inventing stories with objects full of memory. Playing, dancing, watching an object theatre performance.

A day in the open air, a return to school — but this time, to EscolaNova — with a proposal for a lighter presence, with time, space, and a desire to enjoy a place designed for sharing creation and the experience of art.

Cooking stone soup
Luísa Alves José

Luísa will guide us in preparing the famous stone soup, as it's made in Bordeira. WWe'llinaugurate our community kitchen to learn local recipes from village residents. Come early in the morning to learn how to make this delicious soup, which we'll share under the shade of the big pine tree.
11:00 am - 07:00 pm
Creation of Little marvellous Tales from things lost in time
Madalena Victorino and Ricardo Falcão

A new archive of fantastic stories will begin at EscolaNova from forgotten objects emerging from their past lives. How do you create a narrative for an old, rusty pair of scissors? How can a story be transformed into a futuristic fiction in three parts? How do you look at someone and realise their story is hidden inside them? Through interviews, drawings and collections of aimless small objects, everything will come together so that, by the end of the day, we can begin an imaginary library of miniature books bearing news from all corners of the world, collected by those who passed through EscolaNova that day.
11:00 am - 04:30 pm
Sand Sculptures
Paulo Quaresma

From a simple pile of sand comes the chance to create meaningful shapes. These always-unique sand sculptures will take shape every Sun Day. Guided by Paulo Quaresma, participants will shape the sand with their hands, collaborating in collective sculptural creations. Each sculpture is ephemeral — lasting a month — a temporary testimony to the art that arises from unity and shared imagination.
11:00 am - 04:30 pm
Green Little Donkeys

In the village of Bordeira, as in many others, children made their own toys from what nature offered. From cabbage stalks and sticks, they crafted little donkeys — simple yet full of imagination. The most enormous stalk became the body, four twigs made the legs, one became the neck, and a piece of cabbage formed the head, with two tiny ears completing the figure.

In this workshop, we revive that tradition and invite both young and old to create donkeys, celebrating creativity, nature, and the memory of childhood past. These little vegetable sculptures will also decorate the setting where we enjoy our Stone Soup — nourishing body and collective imagination.
11:00 am - 04:30 pm
Orchestra of Kitchen Utensils and fine China
Ricardo Falcão

After tasting the traditional Stone Soup, it is time to create an Orchestra of Kitchen Utensils and Fine China. Guided by Ricardo Falcão, everyone is invited to participate in this unique sonic experience. Participants will not only cook a meal but also a sound, a melody, and a rhythm — contributing to a collective sound composition. Together, we'll discover new music-making methods, using kitchen tools and fine china as instruments. A moment of collaborative creation and fun, where cooking meets music.
11:00 am - 04:30 pm
Uma Carta Coreográfica
Madalena Victorino

“Uma Carta Coreográfica” is an open-air photography and dance exhibition inviting thought and movement. With photographs of artists from around the world, curated by Madalena Victorino, this exhibition reveals dance as emerging from our human and everyday experience — as if the body, just simply existing, is already dancing. Magnum Soares and Rafael Pinto, two talented dance performers, will be present to create instant choreographies based on the cards from this exhibition. A unique opportunity to move — with family, friends or even strangers — through aspects of life that resonate with us all.

Object Theatre · Puppetry - M/6+
K-Barré
Turak Théâtre — FR

K-barré is the featured performance of this first Sun Day — an object theatre and puppetry performance by Michel Laubu, coming from France and finding its Portuguese dimension at EscolaNova.

Inspired by cabarets, the performance is an artistic puzzle that assembles and disassembles itself through the eccentric, visual, musical and poetic language of Turak. There will be tango, dancing, singing, and drawing, and music will play a central role.
06:00 pm
Therapeutic vibrations with signging Bowls and Gongs
Nídia Barata

Nídia Barata invites us to explore the healing power of sound through Tibetan singing bowls and gongs in a unique experience of self-discovery and well-being. When they sound, these bowls and gongs vibrate uniquely, revealing their therapeutic qualities — capable of promoting inner balance and harmony. On this sonic journey, Nídia will teach us techniques for self-care, using sound and vibration as powerful tools for deep relaxation and energetic recovery. A moment to reconnect with our essence through the resonant magic of sound.
