MARIANA ROOT

Mariana Root takes us on an alchemical journey into the power of sounds. It is her roots in a lineage of "singers" and the richness of ancient traditions that inspire her, and it is through contemporary co-creation that she finds and explores the nature of her sound.

Graduate in Jazz Singing, she later witnessed in the Americas the different rituals, ceremonies and offerings of indigenous cultures of the Amazon and the Andean mountain range. Mariana conveys in her native song the ancestry of a human state integrated with nature. On returning to Portugal, in Beiras, she started her relationship with Portuguese ancestrality, through the melodies of the "adufeiras" (traditional portuguese drummers) from Monsanto and Paúl with whom she lived and experienced the art of Adufe. Through various traditional forms of percussion and her vocal shifts, Mariana presents us with work that celebrates the memory of a ritualistic past to be rescued.
